Mushu’s Journey: From Reactive to Calm with Training That Lasts

Initial Concerns:

Kim contacted Tyler at Training That Lasts due to serious concerns about her Pitbull, Mushu. Mushu had bitten another dog, which significantly raised red flags about his reactivity toward other animals. His reactivity was a big issue, as he had previously jumped the fence to get to the neighbor’s dogs—although he wasn’t aggressive with them, the potential was there. Kim needed to act fast, fearing for Mushu’s interactions with other dogs.

In addition to the dog aggression, Mushu had other behavioral challenges. He was known for jumping on people, pulling on his leash, and growling at other dogs, making walks and social interactions difficult. Living in a multi-level house meant Mushu had ample opportunity to act out, which added to Kim’s worry about controlling him in daily life.

Why Kim Reached Out:

Kim sought help from Training That Lasts to address Mushu’s aggression and leash reactivity before the situation worsened. With a large, strong dog like Mushu, who was already showing unpredictable behavior, she needed a professional to help correct these behaviors. Tyler’s approach and experience working with reactive dogs was exactly what Mushu needed.

The Training Program:

Mushu began training twice a week with Tyler, starting over a year ago, and participated in multiple group training sessions. Over time, Tyler worked with Mushu on his reactivity toward other dogs and people, addressing leash manners, impulse control, and overall behavior management.

Mushu also participated in a Board & Train program and received behavioral consultations to address deeper issues like aggression. This consistent exposure to structured training helped Mushu adjust and progressively become calmer and more predictable in public settings.

The Transformation:

Mushu’s progress has been nothing short of remarkable. From being a dog that was reactive and aggressive toward other dogs, he has become calm and manageable in group settings. He now attends group training regularly, and his leash manners have improved significantly. What used to be anxiety-inducing situations for Kim and Mushu are now manageable, and Mishu is thriving socially.

Kim couldn’t be happier with the progress Mushu has made. Thanks to Training That Lasts, Mushu is now able to be around other dogs without aggression, making walks and social interactions much more enjoyable and stress-free.

Kim's Testimonial

“Training That Lasts, led by Tyler, has been a transformative experience for my pit bull, Mushu, over the past 10 months. After rescuing Mushu last June and a very unfortuate event in July, I called Tyler for help. Since then, Tyler has worked with Mushu weekly in 1-on-1 sessions, and the progress has been remarkable. More recently, we participated in a 5-session group class. Mushu, who was once a very nervous and unsocialized dog, has gained confidence around both people and other dogs. He is truly a different dog than he was before meeting Tyler”.
