Chicagoland Dog-Friendly Events
January 2026 — New Year, New Adventures, Same Good Dogs 🐾
January is underrated. Less chaos, fewer crowds, and a lot of “this is new” moments for your dog, which is exactly where real training gets forged. Below is a curated list of in-person, one-time dog-friendly events around Chicago and the areas our clients actually come from, including DuPage, Kane, Kendall, and Will County.
Please note: These are not Training That Lasts events. We’re sharing them because we strongly encourage connection and structured socialization for you and your dog. New environments, calm behavior around distractions, and learning to exist around other dogs without losing your mind, that’s the real world. That’s the point.
Early January Events
A full weekend of dogs, vendors, demos, and “I didn’t know that breed existed.” Great for humans who love dog-world stuff. If your dog gets overwhelmed in crowds, go human-only and steal the ideas for your training goals.
Thinking about adding a dog to the family this year? OTAT is running a discounted adoption fee day. Great cause, great people, and a chance to meet dogs looking for their forever home.
Off-leash play, social time, and lots of “is that mine?” moments. Great for dogs who enjoy play groups. If your dog gets overly hyped, go early, stay short, leave on a win.
Mid-January Events
A creative night out where your dog ends up involved, usually with paw-print keepsake chaos. This is a solid “calm in a busy room” training field trip if your dog can handle indoor social settings.
Trivia, but with dogs. Your job is simple, reward calm behavior, keep your dog from body-checking strangers for attention, and pretend you know all the answers.
Late January Events
A winter nature day with activities, demos, and that crisp lakefront energy that makes your dog act like they just drank espresso. If your dog is sensitive to crowds or other dogs, keep distance and make it a calm exposure session.
Yoga + adoptable puppies + skyline views. This is usually not a “bring your own dog” event. It’s a fundraiser-style session where the puppies are the stars, and honestly, they deserve it.
A practical event for winter health questions. Good for owners, and a decent “calm in public” outing for stable dogs. Keep it structured, reward neutrality, and don’t let your dog rehearse bad habits in a busy room.
Tips For A Smooth Outing
Keep It Short
Leave while your dog is still doing well. That’s how you build confidence instead of chaos.
Pay For Calm
Reward quiet, neutral behavior. Don’t wait until your dog is losing it to start “training.”
Create Space
Distance is your friend. You can do a lot of progress without going nose-to-nose with everything.
Plan For Winter
Cold paws and slippery sidewalks change behavior. Bring traction, warmth, and patience.
Want Your Dog To Be “Easy” In Public?
If your dog turns into a tornado around other dogs, people, or new places, you’re not alone. That’s exactly what we work on. Real-world calm, real-world reliability, real-life results.
Let’s build a dog you can actually take places.
