Generalization

Generalization is a dog’s ability to perform a learned behavior across different people, places, positions, surfaces, distractions, and situations.

Common Signs

  • Listens at Home but Not Outside
  • Ignores Cues in New Places
  • Pulling Around Distractions
  • Slow Responses
  • Loss of Focus

Important Distinction

Knowing a behavior in one room does not mean the dog is refusing elsewhere. The behavior may not yet have been taught broadly enough to generalize.

What Can Help

Practice the same skill in small variations, lower difficulty when the environment changes, reinforce successful repetitions, and avoid testing the dog at full difficulty too soon.

When To Get Professional Help

Professional coaching helps when skills remain tied to one handler or location, progress stalls outside the home, or distractions cause the behavior to disappear completely.
