Freeze Response

A freeze response is a sudden reduction or stop in movement when a dog is processing threat, conflict, uncertainty, or intense focus.

Common Signs

  • Sudden Stillness
  • Stiff Body
  • Closed Mouth
  • Fixed Stare
  • Refusing Food
  • Loss of Movement

Important Distinction

A still dog is not necessarily a calm dog. Freezing can be a serious warning that the dog is uncomfortable and deciding what to do next.

What Can Help

Stop adding pressure, create distance, allow an exit, and review what happened immediately before the freeze so the setup can be changed next time.
